How Women Are Driving Climate Resilient Livelihoods in India

In the face of rising climate uncertainty, the path to resilience must be inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven. In India’s Jharkhand and Odisha states, the MPowered project has demonstrated that some of the most powerful climate solutions begin in the hands of women.

From 2016 to 2023, MPowered reached 2,800 women living on less than $1.25 a day, supporting them with digital tools, coaching, and startup capital to launch and grow sustainable livelihoods. What made this program unique was the integration of Trickle Up’s proven Graduation Approach with mobile technology—putting smartphones, and the knowledge they unlock, directly into the hands of women.

Climate Resilience Rooted in Knowledge and Inclusion

At its core, MPowered addressed the vulnerabilities of rural women to both poverty and climate shocks by equipping them with tools to build adaptive, diversified income sources. The project introduced eco-friendly farming practices, promoted water-smart agriculture, and supported locally rooted solutions like vermicomposting and nutri-gardens.

Women learned to cultivate kitchen gardens, raise livestock, and adopt better sowing methods such as intercropping and line sowing—simple yet effective techniques that increase yields and reduce risk. With support from peer coaches known as Smart Sakhis, participants received hands-on training in agricultural sustainability, nutrition, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

These sustainable practices had a noticeable impact:

  • 97% of households reported no food shortages in the past six months
  • 31% saw increased income from agriculture
  • 30% reported increased income from livestock
  • 58% acquired new knowledge in agricultural practices

Smart Solutions for a Changing Climate

One of the project’s most transformative elements has been its emphasis on low-cost, high-impact technologies. Smart cookstoves helped reduce wood consumption and indoor air pollution, while training in organic inputs—like jiva amrut, bija amrut, and mahulastra—replaced expensive and harmful chemical fertilizers.

In Odisha, the widespread adoption of vermicomposting is reducing cultivation costs and improving soil health. In Jharkhand, where water is scarce, participants are learning the value of natural resource management and watershed development to enhance crop productivity and preserve essential resources.

This strategic blend of context-specific adaptation, ecological farming, and financial inclusion has sparked a shift from subsistence farming to more resilient, market-connected livelihoods.

A Ripple Effect Across Communities

As women gained confidence and knowledge, their impact extended beyond individual households. By sharing practices and training neighbors, participants became agents of change within their communities, amplifying the project’s effects on local income, nutrition, and well-being.

Self-employment has grown, and migration for low-wage labor has decreased. Across villages, there’s a clear trend: women are no longer just coping with climate shocks, they’re actively shaping a more sustainable future.
