Maximizing Impact: The MPOWERED Program’s SROI

MPOWERED partners with women in Odisha and Jharkhand to build sustainable livelihoods and end the intergenerational cycle of poverty. Read more on our evaluation of the social return on investment from this project.

Trickle Up launched the MPOWERED (Mobile Connections to Promote Economic Development of Women) project with Tata Communications and the state branches of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission in Odisha and Jharkhand in 2016. The project partnered with 2,800 women across Jharkhand and Odisha to build sustainable livelihoods and foster social, digital, and economic inclusion from 2016-2023.

The project applied Trickle Up’s Graduation Approach to building sustainable livelihoods and adding the power of smartphones to close the gender digital divide, support for livelihood activities through the PoP app and trainings, and provide access to markets and social networks. This evaluation was completed in partnership with Tata Communications in March 2024.

The MPOWERED program has achieved an impressive SROI ratio of 10.54, showcasing its efficiency and effectiveness. For every Indian Rupee invested, significant value has been generated, improving livelihoods, enhancing financial and digital inclusion, and fostering community engagement.

Key Outcomes:

  • Income Generation: Diversified income sources and increased earnings.
  • Knowledge Enhancement: Improved technical skills in livelihood activities.
  • Financial & Digital Inclusion: Greater access to financial services and digital tools.
  • Food Security, Smart Agricultural Practices, & Nutrition: Better crop diversity, yields, and health through initiatives like nutrigardens.

3. Financial Support: Advocate for more seed grants and facilitate access to subsidies and financial assistance.

4. Training Programs: Develop tailored training programs in agriculture, livestock care, and entrepreneurship, and invite experts for specialized workshops.

5. Market Access: Enhance market access through branding initiatives and partnerships with retailers and e-commerce platforms.

6. Digital Tools: Improve the program’s mobile app with user-friendly features and provide digital literacy training.

7. Health Campaigns: Implement health promotion campaigns and organize community events to boost participation and impact.

8. 21st Century Skills: Offer training in critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy.

9. Program Design: Extend the program duration to five years, provide transportation support, and allocate additional resources for monitoring and evaluation.

The MPOWERED program continues to drive sustainable, positive change, cementing its role in long-term socioeconomic development.
