NEW YORK, Nov. 18, 2024 – Alongside a coalition of governments, multilateral institutions, development banks, knowledge organizations, and other international NGOs, Trickle Up proudly announces its role as a founding partner of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a G20 initiative spearheaded by the Government of Brazil, to make a drastic impact in reducing inequalities while eradicating hunger and poverty by 2030. This Alliance represents a powerful step forward in the global mission to eradicate poverty and hunger, an urgent priority given the recent alarming increases in food insecurity and poverty worldwide.
The Global Alliance has garnered unanimous support from G20 members earlier this year and is formally launched today at the G20 Leaders Summit.
As a dedicated supporter of the Alliance’s objectives, Trickle Up believes that achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 2, and 10—eliminating poverty, ending hunger, and reducing inequalities—requires coordinated global action. Through this Alliance, Trickle Up will work alongside government, private sector, and civil society leaders to mobilize critical resources, strengthen local and national policies, and champion inclusive, sustainable solutions that create resilient pathways out of poverty.
Trickle Up’s Commitments to the Alliance
Trickle Up is committed to amplifying its proven Graduation Approach, a holistic methodology for empowering individuals and families facing extreme poverty.
The organization will use its expertise in Graduation and economic inclusion programming to support Alliance member countries in designing, implementing, and scaling poverty reduction programs that directly address the unique needs of the most vulnerable populations.
In the coming years, Trickle Up will:
- Invest USD $15 million to strengthen initiatives advancing food security and poverty alleviation, reinforcing efforts to meet SDGs 1 and 2.
- Lead in “Next Generation Graduation” by developing innovative programming integrating digital inclusion, climate resilience, and a strong focus on marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, refugees, and migrants.
- Provide technical assistance to government partners, sharing training resources, capacity-building tools, and data-driven strategies to support effective program monitoring and local adaptation.
Advancing Trickle Up’s Mission: Forging Resilient Pathways out of Poverty
Graduation is a proven model for poverty and hunger eradication — evidence shows that a holistic combination of assets, skills training, coaching, and market linkages helps people living in extreme poverty develop and sustain livelihoods that break the cycle of poverty and boost local economies. More than 700 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty, roughly 1 in every 10 people, with millions more expected to join their numbers due to global crises like climate disasters, pandemics, and economic shocks. The need for programs like Graduation is increasingly urgent, but implementing these solutions at scale can be a challenge as governments require training and preparation, knowledge exchange, and financial support.
This Alliance is a key opportunity to act on shared commitments between governments, finance, and knowledge partners to improve the enabling environment for implementing and scaling these programs and significantly advancing progress toward the fight to end poverty. Trickle Up will be joined by other organizations sharing technical experience, evidence, and learning, such as BRAC, Fundación Capital, FAO, IPA, IFAD, Village Enterprise, J-PAL, and Leadership Collaborative to End Ultrapoverty.
As a pioneer in advancing opportunities for those in extreme poverty, Trickle Up is committed to leveraging the Global Alliance as a platform to foster systemic change and sustainable poverty alleviation strategies. Trickle Up believes in the power of local, community-led solutions that build resilience against economic and environmental shocks. By contributing technical expertise and evidence-based methodologies, Trickle Up aims to support Alliance member countries in reducing hunger and poverty at scale.
“Our involvement in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty aligns with our mission to help vulnerable communities forge pathways to resilience and dignity,” said Lauren Hendricks, CEO and President of Trickle Up. “By combining our resources and knowledge with the Government of Brazil and other Alliance partners, we’re fostering a unified global commitment to ending hunger and poverty and building a more equitable world for all.”
