Smart Sakhis are the driving force behind Trickle Up’s MPowered project. As catalysts of change, they empower project participants to transform their livelihoods through tailored digital coaching and mentorship. Coaching goes beyond guidance—it’s a trust-based process that helps participants set clear livelihood goals, build essential skills, and navigate challenges with confidence.
For those facing extreme poverty and social exclusion, this personalized support strengthens savings, food security, and personal agency, laying the foundation for sustainable economic success.
The journey of Parwati Lohar from homemaker to Smart Sakhi is a testament to the power of resilience and self-discovery. Married at 18, she moved to her husband’s village, where her world was confined to household chores. With limited education and no fluency in Hindi, she had little opportunity to step outside her home, let alone imagine a different future. Everything changed when she joined a self-help group. In no time, she became Secretary of her group, a role that served as a turning point in her life.
Through self-help group meetings and engagements at the Village Organization and Cluster Level Federation, Parwati gained confidence and began actively participating in community discussions. Her presence and voice started to make a difference, earning her recognition and respect.
Recognizing her leadership abilities, Parwati’s was selected to become a Smart Sakhi under the MPowered project in 2022. This role opened a new chapter for her, and within just three months, she was identified by the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society to serve as a Pashu Sakhi, or livestock facilitator. Through rigorous training, she mastered skills in livestock management, organic manure preparation, agriculture, and accessing government assistance programs.
Equipped with this knowledge, Parwati took on the role of a mentor and guide for others in her village. She began coaching self-help group members, assisting project participants in improving their livestock practices and helping families secure government benefits. Through home visits, she provided hands-on support to improve livelihoods and access essential services.
Today, Parwati is not just a livestock expert, she is a beacon of change in her community. She has played a crucial role in helping women access government assistance and has even facilitated women in securing housing through the Gram Sabha. Her village now sees her as a trusted leader; someone they turn to for guidance and support.
As a Smart Sakhi, Parwati has personally coached 24 project participants, guiding them in improving their livelihoods and building confidence to navigate government systems.
“Beyond my community work, I have also built my own successful goat-rearing business, applying the very skills I once learned in training,” said Parwati. Her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to sharing knowledge are transforming lives, proving that empowerment has a ripple effect: one woman’s journey can inspire and uplift an entire community.
Parwati’s story is a powerful reminder that with opportunity and determination, transformation is possible. From a young woman with limited opportunities to a community leader making a tangible impact, her journey embodies the true spirit of empowerment.
